Minding The Gap – A HRAFF Fundraiser

Bing Liu / USA / 93min / English / Documentary

“A lyrical skateboard ballet when it wants to be and critical introspection amidst the tumult of family and friendship when it absolutely has to be”

Come and join us at ACMI for HRAFF’s Summer Film Fundraiser – we have an exclusive advanced screening of one of the year’s most anticipated documentaries – MINDING THE GAP – the unforgettable Academy Award shortlisted film that examines race, class and manhood in 21st-century America through the lens of three young skateboarders. 100% of the profits from this event will go towards supporting HRAFF, and help us fund next year’s festival!

In his disarming documentary, director Bing Liu turns the camera on himself and his two childhood friends, all of whom have grown up together, bonded by skateboarding. At that awkward stage of life – still teenagers, but also adults – they each have to navigate their own paths into adulthood replete with new relationships, responsibilities and expectations.

With their lives in flux, it becomes clear that skateboarding is an ever-important constant – a form of escape and a way to heal old wounds.

Minding the Gap premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the special jury prize.

Restricted to persons aged 15 and over unless accompanied by an adult.
